Adult Day Program Volunteer

Position Summary

The Adult Day Program Volunteer plays an important role in creating a welcoming, engaging, and supportive environment for individuals living with dementia. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome participants and help create a warm, inclusive atmosphere.
  • Assist staff with recreational and social activities such as crafts, games, trivia, music, exercise, and special events.
  • Help serve and clear nutritious snacks and lunch, as directed by staff.
  • Provide encouragement and emotional support while promoting participants' independence and dignity.
  • Assist with setting up and tidying activity spaces before and after the program.
  • Observe participants and report any concerns or changes to staff.
  • Maintain participant confidentiality and respect at all times.
  • Represent the Alzheimer Society in a positive, compassionate, and professional manner.

Qualifications

  • A compassionate, patient, and positive attitude.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage respectfully with older adults and individuals living with dementia.
  • Dependable, reliable, and able to work as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn about dementia and participate in orientation and training.
  • Previous volunteer or caregiving experience is an asset but is not required.

Time Commitment

  • One program day per week (approximately 6 hours for full day or 3 hours for half day), or as mutually agreed upon.

Training and Support

Volunteers receive orientation and ongoing support from Alzheimer Society staff, including education on dementia, communication techniques, safety procedures, and program expectations.

Note

This volunteer position is supportive in nature and does not involve providing personal care, administering medications, or lifting or transferring participants. Participants must be early to mid-stage in their diagnosis. Volunteers work under the guidance and supervision of Alzheimer Society staff at all times.
