Mentor (min 25 y/o) for youth in/from child welfare system.
The StepStones Youth Support Services Program, is looking for diverse energetic individuals (minimum
25
y/o) who would like to mentor youth leaving foster care or group homes. The role of the mentor is an
important one. Our goal is to connect youth with long-lasting mentors that will part of the youth's
circle of support. We want to ensure that the mentors are fully equipped with the necessary tools they
need to navigate their relationships with their mentees. We also provide ongoing supports after all
training is completed.
Being a StepStones Mentor involves giving unconditional positive regard and being a positive role
model when working with youth who have experienced significant trauma/loss. It requires flexibility,
and a commitment to supporting the youth in navigating life circumstances. The role requires the
ability to supporting the youth in a non-judgemental way that also gives the youth autonomy to make
their own decisions. It involves encourage growth without pressure.
You will be asked to meet with a youth at least once every 2-3 weeks for approximately 3-4 hours at a
time. A minimum three-year commitment is required (but we prefer it if you treat this as a lifelong
commitment and relationship to the youth). During your meetups with your mentee, you may attend
workshops put on by StepStones and/or engage in fun activities such as attending a movie, going for
lunch, attending a festival, going ice skating, rock climbing, sports event and/or other low-cost activities in
the city. During most sessions, the mentor and their mentee would be expected to work towards some of
the goals created at the beginning.
Examples include resume writing, job search, registering for school, learning how to cook, connecting
with services in the community, etc.
