    Role Details

    The Therapy Dog Unit Coordinator manages, supports and facilitates local St. John Ambulance (SJA) Therapy Dog services and affiliated initiatives. The Therapy Dog Unit Coordinator is responsible for the overall organization and training of the Therapy Dog Unit. Coordinators work closely in co-operation with and regularly communicate with their Regional Therapy Dog Program Advisor and Regional Community Services Coordinator, and as required, the Therapy Dog Advisor of SJA to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of the program. Coordinators must adhere to SJA rules and guidelines and follow the specific rules and best practices for the Therapy Dog program.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    • In collaboration with the Region, host Therapy Dog orientations and recruitment sessions
    • In collaboration with Unit Assistant Coordinators, arrange scheduled visits to schools, hospitals, long term care facilities
    • In collaboration with the Region, schedule new volunteer orientations, coordinating member onboarding, mentoring and evaluations as needed
    • In collaboration with the Regional Community Services Coordinator, assist with public relations initiatives
    • In collaboration with the Region, provide service-related resources (e.g. uniforms and dog tags) to appropriate volunteers
    • Provide reports as requested by the Region, Regional Therapy Dog Advisor and/or Council
    • Attend Provincial Therapy Dog Coordinators’ meetings as required
    • Oversee, select, co-ordinate and track Child and Paws for Stories related activities
    • Ensure that all records and reports are completed accurately and submitted on time to the appropriate level in accordance with SJA policies and procedures. Examples of reports include but are not limited to veterinarian forms and tracking of volunteer visits and hours Liaise with Region and Regional Community Services Coordinator/Therapy Dog Regional Advisor on relevant administrative support issues, such as but not limited to, Fundraising, and service delivery within the Unit’s catchment area.
    • Identify community needs and resources as they relate to the program
    • Schedule semi-annual Unit meetings
    • Co-ordinate, track and report all honours and awards to the Regional Community Services Coordinator, H&R Group for ordering, tracking and/or further consideration
    • Appoint Assistant Coordinators as needed
