    Senior Software Developer (Volunteer)

    The Senior Software Developer (Volunteer) provides technical leadership and mentorship while architecting, developing, and maintaining scalable software solutions that support Black Engineers of Canada's programs, members, and operations.

    Role Details

    Who We Are

    Black Engineers of Canada (BEC) is a Non for Profit Professional Organization geared towards providing a safe environment for Black Engineers where they can aspire and become a better version of themselves. We empower and uplift the Black Engineers community, including youth and aspiring engineers, by advocating for equitable opportunities, enhancing living conditions, and promoting mental health improvement. We achieve this through robust mentorship programs, impactful networking events, innovative educational initiatives, safe spaces for difficult conversations, and dedicated research efforts. We are committed to leveraging all our human and financial resources towards realizing a stronger and more inclusive community.


    The Job

    We are searching for a Senior Software Developer (Volunteer) who will handle key responsibilities by dedicating 5 - 7 hours weekly of volunteer time.


    The Senior Software Developer (Volunteer) provides technical leadership and mentorship while architecting, developing, and maintaining scalable software solutions that support Black Engineers of Canada's programs, members, and operations. This role will help shape the organization's technical roadmap, establish development best practices, review code, and guide junior developers and student volunteers in delivering high-quality digital solutions. This position plays a critical role in strengthening BEC's digital infrastructure and enhancing the experience of members and stakeholders across Canada.


    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Software Development & Architecture

    • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable web applications, platforms, and digital tools.
    • Architect software solutions that align with organizational needs, performance requirements, and long-term sustainability.
    • Ensure software applications are reliable, secure, and user-friendly.
    • Participate in technical planning, system design, and feature prioritization discussions.

    Technical Leadership & Mentorship

    • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior developers, student volunteers, and technical team members.
    • Conduct code reviews and promote software development best practices.
    • Support team members in troubleshooting technical challenges and improving coding skills.
    • Foster a collaborative and inclusive development environment.

    Application & Platform Enhancement

    • Identify opportunities to improve existing systems, workflows, and user experiences.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and implement technical solutions.
    • Support integration of third-party tools, APIs, and cloud-based services.
    • Help establish and maintain development standards, documentation, and coding guidelines.

    System Performance & Security

    • Ensure applications follow security best practices and industry standards.
    • Monitor application performance and recommend improvements for scalability and reliability.
    • Assist with troubleshooting, debugging, and resolving technical issues.
    • Support data protection and cybersecurity initiatives where applicable.

    Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

    • Create and maintain technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and development guides.
    • Share knowledge with team members through training sessions, code walkthroughs, and technical discussions.
    • Contribute to building sustainable development processes and technical knowledge within the organization.

    Qualifications

    • Interest in supporting community, social, or charitable initiatives.
    • Degree, diploma, or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
    • 5+ years of software development experience preferred.
    • Strong proficiency in one or more programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, or similar.
    • Experience developing web applications, APIs, and cloud-based solutions.
    • Familiarity with modern development frameworks, databases, and version control systems (e.g., Git).
    • Experience with software architecture, code reviews, and technical mentoring.
    • Understanding of software security, scalability, and performance optimization principles.
    • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
