About This Opportunity

Role Summary: 

Work one-on-one with an individual living with dementia. Assist them in capturing a life story, which helps utilizing long-term memory and stimulating the brain. Engaging in Life Story work benefits those individual living with dementia to: 

  •  Allow their family and friends to get to know them better
  • Spark fun, meaningful discussion together 
  • Share their book and create a wonderful legacy for family, future generations
  •  Aid health professionals with insight for more individual personalized care

 Meet once a week for an 8 week in-person session here at our offices. Using our guides and computerized life stories template, assist an individual living with dementia to complete a 10 to 20 page life story book with guiding questions and provided photographs. The first hour of your role is spent with the individual and the second is formatting and editing the collected information from the prior hour.

Responsibilities 

  •  Meet with an individual living with dementia at the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region office once a week for 1 hour. Following 1 hour is creating and formatting story page from the notes and pictures captured from the previous hour. 
  • Develop 1 page per week of the life story book, using the Recollection Program guidelines and computerized life stories template. 
  • Comply with the confidentiality policy of Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region.
  • Maintain strictest of confidence with all matters related to the Society and its clients. 

Required Skills/Experience • Excellent communication and listening skills.

  • Commit to attending the program weekly for 8 consecutive weeks. 
  • Comfortable using computers.
  • Responsible and dependable.

Training Requirements 

  • Orientation to agency, Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region programs, policies and procedures. 
  • Completion of Volunteer Training Program

 Other Requirements 

  •  Completion of two reference checks 
  •  Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Clearance
