Since its founding in 1977, Katimavik, Canada's top youth service organization, has assisted in fostering the growth of young people into competent and active leaders. Youth between the ages of 17 and 25 who participate in Katimavik's National Experience program get the chance to spend a total of six months living in two new Canadian communities. Participants are divided into groups of ten other young people, and via community service, volunteer work, group learning activities, and workshops, they build skills for jobs and life that they may then apply to their home communities. 37,000 volunteers have taken part in Katimavik throughout the years, and the vast majority of them concur that the event has changed their lives.
