About This Opportunity

The Cross-Cultural Learner Centre (CCLC) is London’s leading newcomer agency, supporting refugees and immigrants in their settlement process. Each year, we welcome thousands of newcomers and connect them with volunteers who play a key role in helping them feel at home in our community.

Through our Canada Connects Program, we are looking for dedicated volunteers to be matched with newcomer families or individuals for a period of 4 to 6 months. Volunteers meet with their match weekly for 1–2 hours, providing mentorship, guidance, and friendship. This role is about building relationships and helping newcomers navigate life in London, Ontario.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Introduce newcomers to life in London, ON (neighbourhoods, community services, events).

Support with everyday tasks such as using public transportation, shopping, or accessing services.

Help with English practice, reading/understanding documents, and computer literacy.

Assist with job readiness, including resume building and job search guidance.

Provide tutoring or homework support where needed.

Offer insight into Canadian culture and daily life.

Be a friendly face and a source of encouragement as newcomers adjust to their new community.

Requirements:

Minimum 18 years of age.

Commitment of at least 5 months.

Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Check.

Two non-family references (with contact information).

Must be a resident of London, ON for at least 6 months.

Skills Preferred:

Strong communication and listening skills.

Patience, reliability, and a welcoming attitude.

Ability to handle stress or conflict calmly.

Respectful, nonjudgmental, and culturally sensitive.

Why Volunteer?
By becoming a mentor, you’ll gain valuable cross-cultural experience, develop new skills, and most importantly, make a meaningful difference in the lives of newcomers. Volunteers often become the first friends newcomers make in Canada—helping them feel welcome and at home in London.
