About: 

The Dorothy Ley Hospice provides a unique and caring environment where individuals from all backgrounds come together with a shared desire to assist those during their time of greatest need. Hospice volunteering is suitable for compassionate individuals who are dedicated to supporting palliative patients and being a constant presence throughout their journey. While it may be difficult for some, for many, it is an extremely rewarding and satisfying way to help to others. There are both direct and indirect service positions at Dorothy Ley, allowing you to contribute assistance and support in various ways based on your comfort level.

The Spiritual Care Volunteer Duties: 

  • Offer a comforting presence to individuals facing the challenges of dying, death, and grief, as well as their families, fellow volunteers, and others involved
  • The Volunteer's main objective is to provide support and encourage individuals to explore and express their personal spiritual beliefs, whether they are rooted in religion or not
  • Scheduling can range from spending 1 hour within the community or 4 hours per week for visits in residential settings

Direct Support Roles: 

  • Offering direct help and compassionate assistance to palliative individuals
  • Reading to individuals
  • Bringing cups of tea

Indirect Support Roles:

  • Kitchen helpers
  • Committees
