About Us

St. George on Yonge is a welcoming and inclusive urban church committed to serving our community through meaningful and relevant programs. Our community gardening ministry creates a space of beauty, connection, and nourishment—bringing people together while supporting local needs by easing food uncertainty We also strive for a moderate level of environmental sustainability.


This year, we plan to substantially expand our community garden by developing a previously unbroken area of some 400sq/ft. plus possibly adding some containers.


Role Overview

We are seeking up to 4 passionate and organized individuals as Volunteer Community Gardening Team Leaders to supervise teams of volunteers, initially in the preparation of our new garden space, and throughout the 2026 growing season in planting, nurturing and harvesting.  This individual will help cultivate not only plants, but also relationships, fostering a spirit of service, sustainability, fellowship and fun.


In addition, you will be welcome to contribute to our planning team your knowledge and experience in soil preparation, crop selection and timing and environmental sustainability.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and oversee volunteer teams in soil preparation, seasonal planting and garden maintenance
  • Supervise and support volunteers of all ages and skill levels
  • Supervise the proper use and care of tools, supplies, and garden spaces
  • Promote environmentally sustainable gardening practices

Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in gardening, urban agriculture, or landscaping
  • Ability and willingness to lead and encourage volunteers
  • A heart for community outreach and service
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

Time Commitment: 

  • Flexible- select your shifts with the other members of the roster - April 18 – mid-June, up to 4 hours per week
  • Mid-June through fall – likely fewer hours (as required) 
  • Typical hours Saturdays 9:30 am - 12:30 pm (arrange earlier during the summer heat)
  • Additional weekdays or evenings are possible
