About This Opportunity
Surfrider South Vancouver Island Chapter, Core crew, Media committee
Position type: 1 year volunteer commitment (4hrs per week).
Reports to: Executive Committee
Summary: This volunteer is passionate about enhancing Surfrider’s ocean conservation efforts through communications. This volunteer role involves managing Surfrider Foundation SVI’s communications, from social media platforms, press releases, online and print content, advertising, and marketing strategies. The Communications Volunteer is part of the Media team, and will work closely with the lead of this group, with the aim of growing Surfrider’s audience and increasing impact through this growth. The Communications Volunteer will need to gain comprehensive understanding of all campaigns, programs and events in order to effectively communicate about Surfrider Foundation efforts with the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monthly meetings with Chapter Manager and media team to stay current according to 2019 strat planning.
- Evolving current internal and external communications plan alongside Chapter Manager and Media Lead. In conjunction with this, creating a marketing plan for the Chapter to follow for the rest of 2020.
-Create shareable content that educates, empowers, and engages audience members. Content will also promote Surfrider Foundation brand and mission.
- Sharing current articles on plastic pollution and solutions, circular economics, and ocean conservation on Facebook and Instagram
- Development of print and online advertising
-Tagging all businesses, organizations and individuals that Surfrider Canada and/or SVI works with on social media channels
- Contacting media channels to inquire about Surfrider sharing articles, opinions, content.
- Aiding with website content and website marketing.

- Providing expertise on how to attract more attention from media outlets
- Uses our communications email addresses for all surfrider communications & checks this chapter email account and replies to emails within 3-5 days
- Attends the annual AGM in January
- Attends monthly meetings when available, and reviews the meeting minutes.
- Completes SF University in 3 months https://cnet.surfrider.org/training/sfu/
- Contributes to the development and implementation of the chapter strategic plan
- Liaise with new and existing stakeholders, media, sponsors and partners
- Attends Surfrider public meetings & events when available
- nJoins/follows/likes; official Surfrider SVI;s Facebook page, public forum, Instagram feeds
Qualifications
- Familiar with all of Surfrider Foundation SVI’s programs & campaigns.
- Becomes a Surfrider Foundation member.
- Organized and can dedicate his/her time to accomplish monthly tasks
- Strong communicator, leader, team member, and public speaker
- Familiarity with MS Word, Excel, Google docs & calendar, mailchimp and WordPress
- Uses popular social media: Facebook, Instagram
- Holds BC drivers license, has access to a vehicle and is willing to use their vehicle for chapter operations
