Big Brother/Big Sister Mentor

WITH BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF CHATHAM-KENT

Summary

Many young people in Chatham-Kent suffer with societal barriers and encounter difficulties in their daily lives such poor living conditions, family violence, risk factors for mental illness, problems in education, and troubles with their identities. Children and teens run the risk of not having the chance to reach their full potential despite the fact that these conditions have nothing to do with the value of who they are or who they can become.

These hazards can be minimized or even avoided with the help of a mentor, and young people are reminded that they can become anything they desire. In order to encourage potential, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent recruits, screens, and trains volunteer mentors, then matches them with young people in the area.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent offer Big Brother and Big Sister mentoring programs which are each excluded to the male and female sex respectively. The goal is to provided youth with a role model to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the mentee, which is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced case-workers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the mentor and the mentee.

The Big Brothers & Sisters mentoring program usually requires weekly visits of 2-3 hours in length, and a one-year minimum commitment.
