Tips on Using Opportunity Search to Find a Great Opportunity

By: Volunteer Success

While we continue to add lots of new opportunities daily from all across Canada, you may be asking yourself how do I use the search filters to find something that works for me in my community? Look no further, we’re here to help!

Search by City, Town or Region

The most common type of search is based on your geographic location. There are two ways to find something in your community.

1. Enter the name of your city/town or region in the search box and then click on search (the magnifying glass icon).

OR

2. Click on Distance - this gives you the opportunity to enter your postal code and distance you are willing to travel (see image below). Click on Search and you will get opportunities in that specific area. Use the slider to adjust your kilometres.

Open to Virtual/Remote Opportunities?

If you are interested in volunteering from the comfort of your home, select Virtual as your filter.

Other Helpful Filters

You can also use two filters at the same time to get a more narrow search result. For instance, you may wish to find all virtual opportunities that are designated by a certain cause. First click the virtual filter and then cause filter which would give you the opportunity to select your cause(s).

Or you may wish to find opportunities suitable for students in your local area: click on the student filter and then use one of the two options above (search bar or distance filter) to narrow your search to your geographic area.

Finally, check out the Communities page to see if there's one near you. We have grouped organizations and opportunities by city and/or region.

Next steps

Find something that interests you? Click on I’m Interested (but make sure you are logged into your account first) and the organization will get an email with your name and email address to prompt them to respond to you. You will also get the option to include a note to the organization as well as a direct link to their application page (if they have provided it).

Not finding something that interests you? Consider making an offer to volunteer to a wide range of organizations using our Make an Offer feature! Check out the article on How to Write an Attractive Offer to Organizations so that you can highlight your skills, availability and interests to organizations on our website.

If after searching our site and making an offer you still haven’t found what you are looking for, check out our article on How to Find Volunteer Opportunities Online, beyond our website.
