Pride Month is a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity, inclusion and the courage of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. By celebrating it with your family, you can help break generations of stereotyping of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. At the end of the day, Pride Month is all about celebrating love in all its forms, and to teach the next and previous generations on the importance of embracing and celebrating diverse individuals.
Here are 6 ways to celebrate this pride month with your family:
1. Educate Together
You should start with learning and understanding the history of Pride Month, and why it’s so significant to the 2SLGBTQ+ community. By understanding the past, it allows you to start conversations on what you can do in the present and in the future. You should also read and watch videos of people who experienced growing up 2SLGBTQ+, as this gives you a better perspective on their struggles and allows you to become a better ally.
2. Attend Pride Events
Cities all across Canada host a variety of different pride events, ranging from the headlining Pride parades, to concerts, workshops you can attend with your family and even Storytime with drag queens! Attending these events with your family can be really fun so check your local charities for any workshops you can attend to support them.
3. Watch 2SLGBTQ+ Movies and Shows
With an increasing number of 2SLGBTQ+ movies and shows available not only on the big screen, but on streaming services as well, watching these with your family can increase their understanding and start open discussions on different identities and orientations, and what kind of hardships they face.
4. Do Arts and Crafts
Doing arts and crafts is an easy way of celebrating pride in the confines of your own home. Ever since the 1970s, the rainbow has been an emblem for the 2SLGBTQ+ community, the colors represent the diversity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, with each color representing a different part of the community. You can create rainbow bracelets using beads, or even create rainbow drawings using dry erase markers on the windows of your home. By teaching your family the significance behind creating these crafts and art while creating them, you’re teaching them that it’s ok to be different, and that we should celebrate our differences rather than shunning them.
5. Volunteer for Your Local 2SLGBTQ+ Charity
Volunteering with your family in support of Pride Month is a great way to spend quality time, teach them the importance of equality, foster empathy, as well as give back to the local 2SLGBTQ+ community. Volunteering with your family also allows you to create lasting memories and cultivate a sense of social responsibility that can extend beyond the volunteer experience. 6. Donate in Support of the 2SLGBTQ+ Community
There are many non-profits who have been set up specifically to support the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Canada. Even though volunteering is a great way of supporting these non-profits, the best way to support them is to donate money and help them support a larger number of people and fund crucial programs. Every donation, no matter how small it is, counts and helps contribute to a more inclusive and diverse community.
